Community & Economic Impact

Petmin USA is committed to continue working in collaboration with a very supportive, and most welcoming local community to ensure delivery of a world-class facility that Ashtabula will be proud of.

Petmin USA is pleased to bring its $474 million Nodular Pig Iron (NPI) facility to Ashtabula and Northeast Ohio. Following a comprehensive review of 15 potential project sites across multiple jurisdictions in the U.S. and Canada, Ashtabula became one of two favored sites, and was eventually selected for the following reasons: excellent infrastructure and logistics, proximity to the customer base, as well as the incredibly competent, enthusiastic project partners engaged in both the public and private sectors.

Petmin USA is committed to continue working in collaboration with a very supportive and most welcoming local community to ensure delivery of a world-class facility that Ashtabula will be proud of.

“It has been a pleasure working with Petmin over the past several years and I am excited to have them as an engaged and trusted member of the Ashtabula County business community.”

− Greg Meyers | Executive Director, Ashtabula Growth Partnership

Transformational Economic Impact & Opportunity

Petmin USA’s plant is expected to have cascading positive impacts on the Ashtabula economy by creating hundreds of jobs and generating millions of dollars for the city’s general fund and thus contribute to increased improvements in local public services. “The economic and tax benefits of the project will be far-reaching, providing valuable economic resources to local business and governments, households, schools and philanthropic entities during the construction and permanent operations of the new facility,” said Greg Myers, Executive Director, Ashtabula Growth Partnership.

It is also expected to highlight Ashtabula on the map for future commercial growth as this will be the first facility in North America dedicated to the production of high-quality NPI. Hundreds of companies in the metal-casting industry across the U.S. and concentrated in and around the Great Lakes region currently have no option but to import this niche commodity.

my lifetime in Ashtabula County.”

− Casey Kozlowski | Ashtabula County Commissioner

Permanent Jobs

The operation of the plant will create 110 permanent jobs with a payroll of $6.6 million annually and is expected to support more than 300 additional jobs in the area as the result of increased local demand in the goods and services sectors, including groceries, restaurants, entertainment, fuel, healthcare, housing, and banking. This will ultimately support and expand on Ashtabula’s existing tourism sector, not only in the four or five summer months of the year, but right throughout the winter period, too.

“This project will be a major shot in the arm for Ashtabula and the surrounding area. It will create high-quality manufacturing jobs here, pump millions of dollars annually into our economy, support new business spending and generate tax revenues.’’

− Greg Myers | Executive Director, Growth Partnership of Ashtabula County

Far Reaching Economic Impact

The economic impacts of Petmin’s operation include:

  • $6.6 million in annual salary earnings
  • Direct spending of these salary earnings on groceries, restaurants, entertainment, fuel, healthcare, housing, banking, and taxes, among other, will have a positive economic impact on the local goods and services industries, ultimately sustaining existing jobs or increasing the number of jobs available in these sectors.
  • Increased indirect spending by those working in the above local goods and services industries will in turn add to a further increased demand in those same sectors, as they, too, will spend a portion of their salary earnings on groceries, restaurants, entertainment, fuel, healthcare, housing, banking, taxes, and others.
  • The expected spike in increased demand for local goods and services will enhance Ashtabula’s local economy, not only in the summer months, but throughout the entire year. Increased spending will translate into increased contributions to the local and regional tax base that in turn is expected to result in improvements to local and regional public services, including improvements to local roads and infrastructure.

Construction Jobs

The upcoming two-year construction period will attract a peak number of 650 contract workers into the Ashtabula area. The project is expected to generate more than $35 million dollars of additional spending within the county during this period, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in local tax revenues. This excludes the direct and indirect spending by those expected to relocate back to their hometown in Ashtabula County, and other workers in neighboring states wishing to settle a little closer to the project site.
